Autocar has named the Audi SQ7 SUV the ‘Innovator of the Year’ thanks to its state-of-the-art electrically powered compressor, which helps to increase the power from the two exhaust-driven turbochargers.
The world-renowned magazine called the SQ7 ‘incredibly influential’ and ‘the start of a new thing’, as it's also equipped with electromechanical active-roll stabilisation system, adaptive air suspension and a 48V electrical subsystem that works with the conventional 12V network and helps to provide a base for the new technologies.
Audi’s brand new compressor helps the V8 engine eradicate turbo lag and improves acceleration, meaning you get 663.8 lb ft of torque at just 1,000rpm - a class leading figure that puts it ahead of any other SUV in terms of performance. The 435PS output is available at 3,750rpm, which is also mightily impressive.
Thanks to the 48V subsystem, the compressor is powered up in less than 250 milliseconds and can spin at 70,000rpm to spool the turbochargers up and also to provide energy for the electromechanical active roll stabilisation system if fitted.
The subsystem connects to the 12V ‘standard’ power system with a DC/DC converter, which transfers the charge from a 48V lithium-ion battery pack under the boot and has a peak output of 13 kilowatts.
This extra power helps to run the fully digital virtual cockpit, MMI navigation with Touch system and full LED headlight set-up.
With many great accessories and options available, the luxury diesel SQ7 starts off at £70,970, and if you want to find out more about this innovative model, contact your nearest Inchcape Audi dealership.
