THIS is quattro
quattro is our market-leading all-wheel drive technology, developed through Audi motorsport engineering, to provide outstanding grip in extreme and every day conditions. As a firm cornerstone of both our philosophy and aims, quattro embodies the Audi spirit and everything it means to progress.
Since making its debut in 1980, Audi quattro has sold more than five million cars featuring permanent all-wheel drive, and, due to its unrelenting popularity and technological innovation, is now available across the entire Audi range. Today, it brings safety, sportiness, and performance to everyday driving; transforming every journey you make into a thrill ride.
The specialised expertise that goes into every Audi quattro permanent all-wheel drive guarantees more driving pleasure – especially on slippery and unpredictable road surfaces.
quattro on ice and snow.
Ice can make even the most familiar roads treacherous to drive on. quattro ensures power is provided to where it's most needed, keeping you stable.
quattro on wet surfaces.
Slippery roads can cause loss of traction, which leads to skidding and aquaplaning. quattro constantly analyses the grip of each wheel and regulates the power they receive.
quattro on loose ground.
Traversing loose ground means that the grip of each wheel can change in an instant. quattro makes sure you stay in control in all conditions.
quattro on the road.
Wherever life may lead behind the wheel, quattro brings peace of mind, comfort, and enjoyment to the road in equal measures, enabling you drive the way you've always wanted.
Four times the grip.
quattro is designed to be there when you need it, and always ready when you don’t. Providing power to each axle leads to a low power requirement, and well-balanced handling. This means better traction during acceleration, and greater safety thanks to exceptional road holding; even in conditions where two-wheel-drive vehicles lose grip. Audi’s class-leading all-wheel drive technology offers a choice of four different types to cater to all situations.
Hydraulic multi-plate clutch.
Designed to give a front wheel bias in normal driving conditions. Constant analysis of traction allows adjustments that best suit the terrain, sending up to 100% of the power to the rear wheels when needed.
Self-locking centre differential.
A 50:50 power bias divides the torque equally between the front and rear wheels when driving regularly. This system constantly analyses road conditions, and can send up to 100% of the power to the front or rear.
This sophisticated system switches between all-wheel and front-wheel drive in a fraction of a second by monitoring driving dynamics, road conditions and driver behaviour. The result? A reduction in CO2 emissions and fuel consumption, with all the benefits of quattro.
R8 quattro all-wheel drive.
With a quattro configuration unique from the rest of the range, the R8 sends most of the power to the rear wheels when driving generally. With changes to driving conditions, up to 100% of torque can be sent to the front or rear axles.
This is quattro; built for you. The iconic quattro systems are available across the whole Audi model range, featured on selected trims and engines. No matter what you need from your vehicle, it’s never been easier to feel the value of quattro on every surface, every day.
