When you’re stuck in traffic or stopped at traffic lights, your idling engine still uses fuel. Our start-stop technology switches off the engine when you’re not moving and out of gear.
The starting procedure is triggered as soon as your foot depresses the clutch and you’re up and running by the time you’ve selected a gear. Simple. This saves on energy, CO2 emissions and up to 0.4l of fuel for every 100km.
All Audi diesel engines are TDI engines. This impressive technology marks a departure from the noisy, thirsty diesel engines of the past. The TDI diesel engine delivers power, performance, low fuel consumption and reduced CO2 emissions.
TDI uses the common rail system for more efficiency and power. Here, fuel is stored at constant pressure, ready to feed a series of highly accurate piezo injectors. Precise delivery of the exact amount of fuel means better performance and a 15% reduction in fuel consumption.
When you decelerate, the energy created is lost. Brake energy recuperation recycles this energy to lighten the load on your engine. It can reduce fuel consumption by up to 3%.
When you’re coasting or braking, the car’s alternator generates energy. Brake energy recuperation allows this energy to be stored. When you accelerate or drive at a constant speed this stored energy is used so less energy is wasted in driving the alternator. This lowers fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
A lighter car means less road resistance, lower fuel consumption and less CO2 emissions. Our innovative Audi Space Frame (ASF) consists of a lightweight, high-strength aluminium frame that gives your car outstanding safety, excellent performance and phenomenal efficiency.
The lightweight design quality of the ASF is unsurpassed. Intelligent construction results in a significantly lower weight compared with conventional steel frames. Every component was meticulously designed with its particular task in mind, giving the car excellent performance whilst saving energy.
Audi TFSI engines were the first to combine petrol direct injection and turbocharging to provide greater power with reduced fuel consumption. A TFSI four-cylinder engine delivers fantastic performance using up to 15% less fuel.
Fuel is injected directly into the combustion chambers, so it produces a higher mixture density. This means greater compression, thereby improving efficiency and effectiveness. TFSI engines produce more power with less fuel so it’s no surprise that it was voted Engine of the Year in 2008 - the fourth time in succession.
Aerodynamic performance plays a vital role in reducing fuel consumption. Every Audi prototype spends over 1,000 hours in the wind tunnel undergoing improvements. Streamlined for efficiency, the cars produce less air resistance, improved handling, better stability and lower CO2 emissions.
The distinctive, sporty Audi design looks incredible and performs brilliantly. Endless fine-tuning produces record drag coefficients, low uplift and an efficient undercarriage. The new Audi A4 has achieved a drag coefficient of only 0.27 proving that our sophisticated aerodynamics set the standard.
The revolutionary S tronic transmission combines the agility and responsiveness of a manual gearbox with the convenience and smooth, uninterrupted power of an automatic. Fewer revs per minute and shorter gear changes mean greater fuel efficiency and lower CO2 emissions.
The dual-clutch transmission means gear changes can be cut to just 0.2 seconds, with no noticeable interruption in driving power. The large transmission-ratio of the S tronic allows the car to be driven in the top gears at low revs, reducing fuel consumption.
Individual driving style can influence fuel consumption by up to 30%. Selecting the right gear at the right time is one way to help reduce it. The gearshift indicator will tell you when to change gear and which gear to change to.
In addition, our Drivers Information System with efficiency program continuously monitors things like using the heated rear screen unnecessarily or simply having the window slightly open and advises on adjustments you can make to improve fuel consumption.
