R8 4.2 FSI quattro
A power plant befitting a high-performance sports car
At the heart of the Audi R8 Coupé lies a 4.2-litre FSI engine with eight cylinders in 'V' formation. It's directly descended from Audi's racing cars but refined for even more sustained reliability and driving pleasure.
For optimal weight distribution, the R8 is constructed in a mid-engine configuration. This helps balance with a lower centre of gravity and optimise road holding - much the same as in a Formula 1 racing car.
Start something special
From the exact moment you ignite the Audi R8 Coupé's awe-inspiring engine, you'll be immediately and acutely aware of its breath-taking potential. Here are a few choice facts about its tremendous power and performance.
The V8 4.2-litre FSI engine is derived from the power plants that helped win Le Mans more times than any other engine.
FSI direct injection petrol technology. Fuel is injected under considerable pressure for performance and efficiency.
Dry-sump lubrication ensures oil is pumped round the engine efficiently even under extreme situations, reduces weight and contributes to the low centre of gravity
Standing start to 62mph takes just 4.6 seconds with either the manual or R tronic transmissions
Top speed is 187mph
Max revs at 8,250rpm with the pistons moving 1,000 times a second and air combusting 500 times a second.
The compression ratio is 12.5:1.
Power-to-weight ratio is 296PS per tonne.
Peak torque from 4,500 to 6,000rpm is 430Nm.

A proud racing pedigree
Over 70 years of successful competitive motor racing, we've learnt a lot about building high-performance, class-leading cars. But the knowledge we've built on the track doesn't just stay there; a surprising amount of thoroughbred racing technology finds its way into our production cars. From the ergonomic design of the cockpit to the power of the engine, there's racing pedigree in every Audi.
