3.0 TDI - Clean diesel
Clean diesel technology - Vorsprung durch Technick

Clean and diesel. The two words have never really been associated with each other. But thanks to our commitment to 'Vorsprung durch Technick' we have made it possible. The 3.0 TDI clean diesel engine available in the Audi Q7 features two new technologies - a DeNOx catalytic converter and AdBlue tank - which help to make it one of the cleanest-running diesel technologies available today.

How it works

The 3.0 TDI clean diesel engine uses a diesel oxidation catalytic converter along with a diesel particulate filter and a special DeNOx converter. A biologically degradable water-based solution, known as AdBlue, is injected in minute doses into the exhaust pipe upstream of the DeNOx converter. The hot exhaust gases break down the solution to form ammonia, which in turn splits the nitrous oxide into nitrogen and water. This result is a cut of nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 90 percent.

The solution is stored in a separate tank, which, when full, will easily last as long as the car's service intervals. Audi Technicians then top up the tank during the car's scheduled maintenance breaks.

Future proof

Due to this innovative technology, the Audi Q7 3.0 TDI clean diesel already complies with the EU 6 emissions standard that only comes into force in Europe in 2014, as well as the stringent BIN 5 standard in the USA.

FSI Explained
FSI: Petrol direct injection

All Audi Q7 petrol engines feature FSI direct injection - a unique technology originally developed for the Le Mans 24-hour endurance race.

With FSI technology, fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber in precisely measured quantities. The amount of fuel that is dispensed varies according to throttle position. This precise method reduces the amount of fuel 'lost' in the combustion process, greatly improving economy and reducing CO2 emissions. FSI also creates greater torque and increased power.

A dedication to pioneering technology has brought Audi peerless expertise in turbocharged diesel engines. All Audi TDI engines are equipped with common rail and piezo injectors to achieve smooth, efficient and quiet combustion. Diesel fuel related emissions are also significantly reduced thanks to a diesel particulate filter, fitted as standard, which filters out almost all soot particles contained in the exhaust gas.

The turbocharger has variable turbine vane geometry to help produce higher torque and greater power for the cubic capacity of the engine. And sophisticated air-flow control also contributes to the engine's capabilities while simultaneously reducing nitrogen oxide emissions
