The new operating philosophy

Intuitive, intelligent and innovative – and that was our ’old’ MMI system.

The new MMI touch comes with the optional MMI Navigation plus system, gives drivers a new and unique ways of operating the MMI navigation system, without the need to divert their eyes from the road ahead. By integrating a touchpad into the centre console drivers can simply write characters to enter addresses, phone numbers or even choose which album to play. The MMI Touch can recognise over a million characters, including Japanese, Chinese, Cyrillic and Korean to name but a few.

Of course the system can still be controlled by voice, however in the spirit of progress through technology town and street names can now be spoken in a single command.

From opera and orchestral to rock ’n’ roll, the optional premium sound systems available in the Audi A6 Avant is a wonder of audio technical achievement. The size, shape and placement of the speakers have been carefully optimised to match the internal dimensions of A6’s cabin to deliver rich, full and clear sound as you travel.

There are two sound systems available:

The BOSE system features a twelve-channel amplifier delivers crystal clear 5.1 surround sound and a massive 600 watts of power to fourteen high-performance speakers.

With the Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System you get the quintessential driving and listening experience combined.

Audi Music Interface: your music goes with you

A very wide range of portable music devices can integrate with your A6 Avant via the optional Audi Music Interface. Once installed, they can be controlled with the multi-function steering wheel if you’ve had one fitted. Supported devices include USB memory sticks, portable hard discs, mobile phones, MP3 players and Apple iPods – even portable cassette players.

But it’s not just the audio signal that’s transmitted. With compatible devices, detailed track information is displayed. You can flick through albums, playlists, select by artist or genre and of course control volume, pause and resume playing.

Mobile Phones

Bluetooth connectivity as standard

A built-in hands-free phone system is standard on the Audi A6 Avant.

The Bluetooth connection allows hands-free operation of compatible mobile phones.

In addition to standard hands-free functionality such as accepting and rejecting calls and hands-free communication, mobile phone preparation provides direct access to entries and phone numbers stored in the address book of compatible phones.

Online Services

Your wireless hotspot

The Audi A6 Avant can be specified with a GPRS module to allow data transfer, allowing current news topics and weather reports to be downloaded to the car, even when you’re on the move.

This service includes a high-speed, UMTS module which will provide three-dimensional satellite and aerial images, as well as photos and information from Google Earth to the navigation system.

This also allows a full-scale internet connection, making the A6 Avant a rolling Wi-Fi hotspot. Laptop users will could even connect to the internet on the move and even stream their music to the car’s audio system via the wireless network.

Gone are the days of wireless mobile dongles - this data connection will require no additional fees or contracts.*

The Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System allows you to hear every nuance in infinitesimal detail. You’ll finally be able to appreciate fully not just the talent of the artists involved but also the hours of studio time and the minute adjustments made during and after the recording process.

Turn the ignition key in the A6 Avant and, keep a close eye on the dashboard, and watch as two tweeters silently emerge from their hidden positions. Besides adding a visual touch of magic, these two sculptured, zinc lenses ensure a wide 180º horizontal dispersion, helping to provide you and your passengers with superior acoustic staging and perspective. It’s all thanks to the amazing acoustic lens technology that’s also used in the renowned BeoLab 5 domestic speaker range.

Surround yourself with sound

The acoustic lenses are just two out of a total of fifteen active loudspeakers that comprise the A6 Avant’s Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System, including a powerful subwoofer and centre speaker. Of course each speaker is completely custom designed for the Audi A6 Avant.

The sound system delivers a total output of 1,200 watts. However, because of Bang & Olufsen’s proprietary ICEpower amplifier technology you’ll get this lavish power without having to spoil the interior with oversized loudspeaker units, the system has been designed to perfectly compliment the Audi A6 Avant.

And because all fifteen speakers have their own dedicated amplifier (active loudspeaker technology), you'll always enjoy the maximum clarity and the best possible control of the overall listening experience.

The experts' view

The sound engineer

Natanya Ford has been playing the violin since she was a child. She’s still fascinated by its unique sound and emotive quality. Now she’s a sound engineer at Bang & Olufsen and a member of the Advanced Sound System team.

“The Advanced Sound System does for your car what Bang & Olufsen’s acclaimed BeoLab 5 has achieved for home listening,” she says. “It turns every piece of music into a unique audio experience.”

The inventor

Acoustic Lens Technology (ALT) ensures that the tone always remains the same, regardless of where you’re sitting. It provides uniform sound dispersion over a 180° angle. Sound technologist Manny LaCarrubba originated Acoustic Lens Technology. He says: “I’m delighted Bang & Olufsen has been able to use my invention to help transform a car interior into a mobile concert hall that does Beethoven justice. It puts the joy back into Ode to Joy.”
