Why run the engine when you're standing still?

If you're stuck in traffic, what's the point of wasting fuel by letting the engine idle needlessly? Once up to operating temperature, Audi's start-stop technology cuts the engine when the car is standing still and in neutral. The engine immediately starts again as soon as you depress the clutch. The whole process is barely noticeable but it can be disabled at the touch of a button if required.

Recuperation

When you're coasting or braking, the car's alternator generates electricity. Recuperation allows it to be stored so when you're accelerating or driving at a constant speed, the stored electricity is used to drive the alternator. Recuperation reduces fuel consumption by up to 3% and also lowers CO2 emissions.

The Audi A5 3.0 TDI won the 2007 Michelin Challenge Bibendum rally in Shanghai in China. It finished ahead of a strong field of competitor vehicles, many of which were powered by expensive, hybrid drives and advanced fuel cells.

The Michelin Challenge is recognised as the world's leading test and showcase event for clean transport. Although it was entered in the Prototype Vehicles category, its new ultra-low emissions engine is virtually production ready. It complies with the world's toughest emission limits - the LEV-II BIN-5 standard - and also meets ultra stringent future European legislation, likely to come into effect in 2014.
