Canterbury City started as an Iron age settlement for the Celts in the 1st century. It was an important centre for the Celtic tribe until the Romans came and took over the city in 43AD.

Stone public buildings were built and the rich Romans built Stone houses with Mosaic floors. A stone wall was erected around the city centre. The town flourished for nearly 300 years, but in the 4th century it declined.

Still today we are reminded of Canterbury’s rich Roman History, as the City wall still stands, even in the building of the new Marlowe Theatre, Roman ruins have been discovered where the old theatre stood, this area never been excavated as deeply before has revealed a treasure chest of roman ruins and artefacts.

The city still has many historical structures including Canterbury Cathedral, the ruins of St Augustines Abbey, and perhaps the oldest school in England, the Kings School.

Canterbury Cathedral has been a place of worship for over 1400 years, dating back to 597AD. It has always played a prominent part in religion. Originally a place of worship for Catholicism, St Augustine arrived as a missionary, sent by Pope Gregory the great to convert the slaves that were for sale in the city to Christianity. During the 10th Century it became a formal residency of Benedictine Monks, which continued until the Monastery was dissolved by King Henry VIII in 1540. Once the monastery had been suppressed it remained a place of worship as it does today, Canterbury Cathedral is the oldest church in England that is still in use.

Pilgrims and visitors have made their way to Canterbury Cathedral since the middle Ages. It remains one of the most visited places in the country, and, just as important, a living community. Visitors have always been made welcome, in the ancient tradition of Benedictine hospitality. Of which they continue the tradition, warmly inviting everyone to share with them the beauty and the unique atmosphere.

One of the ways we measure progress in today's car is how efficiently it uses fuel, which is why new engine technology is at the forefront of so much of our work. Every year we take part in Le Mans 24 hour endurance race. But for us, it isn't simply about coming first. It's an essential part of the development of highly efficient fuel-injection systems. Our new TDI engines are a direct result of this. And among the most frugal we've ever made. Take the Audi A4 2.0 TDIe, for example. At 120g/km of CO2, its one of the lowest A4 ever. or the new Audi A3 1.6TDI. At just 109g/km, its one of the lowest in its class. Or the Audi TT TDI which can do 53.3mpg or 600 miles on a single tank. Even the current Audi A6 is up to 17% more fuel efficient than its predecessor. We've made fuel efficiencies in performance models too. The new S4 has a supercharged engine, but 2 cylinders fewer. The result is not only 97g/km improvement in CO2 emissions but also a 0.5 second improvement on 0-60mph. of course with every innovation comes the challenge to create new ones.
