Driving your Audi in Wintertime

The wintertime can be hard on your vehicle. Motoring organisation RAC give us some tips to make sure our vehicles can cope with the damp and cold conditions.

Wet and cold weather starting and driving conditions impose a much greater burden on the vehicle's battery especially on short journeys when the charging system doesn't have time to replace the battery power drained when using the headlamps, heating the vehicle and de-misting the windscreen.

To help to avoid breaking down the following simple checks be carried out:

Check you have enough fuel for your journey. Vehicles use more fuel when driving in heavy traffic and the stop/start conditions often found in the winter time traffic.

Check oil and water levels and ensure you use the correct concentration of antifreeze. Antifreeze contains additives that prevent corrosion of the engine's cooling system. (If corrosion takes place this can 'sludge' up the passageways and cause expensive engine damage).

Check the condition of your battery. Connections should be tight and free from corrosion. Once checked and cleaned smear the terminals with petroleum jelly to protect them.

Check your tyre pressure and tread depth - and don't forget the spare. The current minimum legal tread depth for cars and light commercial vehicles is 1.6mm. (The greater the tread depth the more efficient the tyre is of clearing water in its path and providing grip in snow, making driving in poor conditions safer).

Check your windscreen. Lengthen your screen's life by having chips or cracks repaired..

Check headlights and indicators. Make sure lenses are free from damage and are kept clean to ensure you can see and be seen.

Check front and rear wiper blades for wear or splitting. Use screen wash additive to help maintain a clear screen but don't use washing up liquid as this contains additives that will attack the paintwork and can cause corrosion.

Check the condition of your car key as a worn key may cause the lock to jam. Replace the battery in your key fob to maintain operating performance.

Check you have adequate breakdown cover, as not all breakdowns are avoidable.

To stop the vehicle door from freezing shut overnight, spray a silicone spray such as furniture polish around the seal of the door before closing it and remember, a vehicle left out in the rain and cold is more susceptible to damp related breakdowns so if you have a garage, use it.
Also when you get in to your vehicle, remember to make sure your engine is running to ensure your vehicle battery is charging before switching on any lights, heaters or any other electrical systems. Switching these on before starting your engine could drain the battery and leave you stranded.

What to carry in your car:

Make sure you have a fully charged mobile phone.

Take a can of good quality de-icer and a windscreen scraper and remember to keep a lock de-icer in the house to ensure you can gain access to your vehicle if the locks freeze shut.

Take some high-energy food such as chocolate or boiled sweets. Carrying a thermos flask of hot soup is recommended on longer journeys.

Wrap up warm and take a blanket, waterproof clothing and sensible footwear.

Take a torch and spare batteries.

Keep a couple of rubber mats in the boot to help your tyres to grip if you find yourself stuck in snow.

Keep a set of jump leads in your boot in case the battery goes flat - but ensure you follow the instructions in the vehicle manufacturer's handbook before jump starting your vehicle as incorrect use could cause damage.

Make sure you have your breakdown membership card/details with you.

Tips to make your winter journey as safe as possible include:

In severe weather conditions, only make trips that are absolutely necessary.

Check the windscreen wipers are not frozen to the screen before you get into your vehicle as failure to do so could cause the wiper motor to fuse leaving you unable to clear your screen.

Use a windscreen scraper or a de-icer to remove ice from every window on your vehicle. Do not use warm water as this may cause the windscreen to crack. Carry a key de-icer with you to clear your lock.

Use the vehicle's air conditioning to help speed up the de-misting of your windscreen.

Allow at least 10 minutes for your vehicle to defrost thoroughly before setting off.

Plan your journey and, in severe weather conditions use major routes which are more likely to have been salted or gritted.

Don't drive if tired. Make sure you take regular comfort breaks.

Remember to allow more time to brake and accelerate. Leave more room between you and the car in front.

If you do breakdown, make sure you know where you are and, to help to locate you, on motorways where possible use the orange coloured SOS phones to call for assistance.

In the event of a breakdown on the motorway, follow the safety advice given.

Lightweight A5 Coupe prototype points to the future

Audi continues to forge ahead as the pioneer of lightweight construction for enhanced performance and optimised efficiency with a new aluminium A5 Coupe prototype.

The new A5 prototype follows from the 550,000 cars with aluminium bodies Audi has built since 1994. It aids development of the Audi Space Frame (ASF) concept and points the way to new material and technology for the cars of tomorrow.

The prototype has jettisoned over 100kg by swapping steel for advanced aluminium and carbon fibre construction in the interest of fuel economy, emissions reduction and handling agility. The A5 project is the latest example of Audi’s pioneering work to extend efficiency optimisation measures well beyond the engine bay.

The ASF principle reduces the weight of a car body by at least 40 per cent compared with conventional steel construction; the kerb weight is 1,310kg for the aluminium A5 prototype, against 1,420kg for the equivalent steel-bodied series production model.

Thanks to the significant weight loss, achieved by mounting aluminium and carbon fibre-reinforced plastics onto the aluminium ASF, the A5 prototype is able to use a four-cylinder engine, giving economy and emissions advantages with the performance of a higher output V6.

With the acclaimed 2.0-litre, 211PS Turbo FSI engine, the A5 achieves a power-to-weight ratio of 161PS per tonne – a production A5 3.2 FSI V6 quattro with 265PS, tips the scales at 1,540kg, and shades it only by a fraction at 172PS per tonne.

The lightweight design has a knock-on effect on ancillaries such as the brakes and transmission, which can also be reduced in size and weight. It enables the car to change direction noticeably more nimbly and, thanks to the reduction in unsprung weight, to ride with even more refinement.

15 years of lightweight construction experience

Over the past 15 years, Audi has employed the ASF principle in two generations of A8 luxury saloon, in the hyper-efficient, ahead-of-its-time, A2 compact hatchback and in the celebrated R8 supercar. ASF has also been re-interpreted in the creation of the latest TT Coupe and Roadster, which feature advanced steel and aluminium ‘hybrid’ construction that allows for outstanding weight distribution.

“One of our most enduring aims for the future is to reverse the weight spiral,” says Michael Dick, Member of the Board of Management of AUDI AG responsible for Technical Development. “Lightweight design is the foundation of our entire approach to improving efficiency.”

The Aluminium and Lightweight Design Centre

Audi established a special Aluminium Centre in Neckarsulm for development, production planning and quality assurance in 1994. The Aluminium and Lightweight Design Centre experiments with high-strength steels, tailored blanks, fibre-reinforced plastics and magnesium.

Heinrich Timm, the Head of the Aluminium and Lightweight Design Centre, says: “Aluminium remains the primary material, but we are intensively investigating the other materials, with our primary focus on fibre-reinforced composites.”

The lessons learned at the Aluminium and Lightweight Design Centre innovation foundry, which employs 150 people, have already served as the basis for a three-digit number of patents in development and production. The European Patent Office named Audi “European Inventor of the Year 2008” for its achievements with the ASF technology.

Lightweight design in the rest of the vehicle

Audi also makes systematic use of lightweight design in the drivetrain and the chassis. Many engines use aluminium and vermicular graphite cast iron, which is the result of a high-tech production process, to reduce the weight of the crankcase. Many models have chassis with predominately aluminium parts.

Carbon fibre-ceramic brake discs are available as an option in the high-performance models. Other highlights of lightweight design include brake calipers, bonnets and boot lids, side panels or cover components made of aluminium and steering wheel rims or instrument panel mounts made of magnesium.

Experience from the world of motorsport flows back into the development work – the reduction and distribution of weight are extremely important for Audi’s pioneering diesel-engined Le Mans sports-prototypes and its DTM touring cars. The race cars provide the production development engineers with important information about carbon and its combination with metal.

Research continues into new materials and alloys, with the focus on minimal weight with maximum durability as well as design and fabrication compatible with the materials.

Audi R8 Spyder launched and heading for the UK

A stunning new take on the much lauded Audi R8 has been launched at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show (September 17-27). The new R8 Spyder with fully automatic lightweight fabric hood brings added wind-in-hair intensity to the already extreme driving experience delivered by the lightweight aluminium, mid-engine and quattro-equipped supercar.

Based on the 525PS, 5.2-litre FSI model, but featuring a bespoke body incorporating additional weight-saving carbon fibre composite panels, the new open-air R8 will be available to order in the UK from November in six-speed manual and six-speed R tronic automated manual forms priced at £111,955 OTR and £117,155 OTR respectively. UK deliveries will start in the first quarter of 2010.

The sculpted lines of the emotion-packed R8 have been subtly re-interpreted to create the new Spyder. The absence of the distinctive sideblades that extend into the roof of the fixed head R8 Coupe has been compensated for by the use of elegantly curved new side panels made of carbon fibre composite that blend beautifully with striking arched and vented cowls behind the cockpit which flow apparently seamlessly into the gently curving carbon fibre composite cover for the hood compartment.

The soft top blends harmoniously into the R8 design, and weighs a mere 30kg. It has no negative impact the dynamic abilities that have brought this car worldwide acclaim.

Electrohydraulically controlled, the hood opens and closes in 19 seconds at speeds of up to 31mph, and when lowering folds like a Z beneath the automatically activated cover of its storage compartment above the V10 engine. The heated glass window, which is separate from the fabric hood, is lowered into the bulkhead. It can be independently raised and lowered at the touch of a button, with the top up or down. An additional net-like wind deflector is fitted as standard and can be latched into the bulkhead behind the seats in two easy steps.

Coupe-like refinement
The top, which comprises an outer skin of a waterproof textile fabric and a headliner, is fully compatible with high-speed driving. When driving at moderate speeds with the top up, interior noise levels in the R8 Spyder are barely higher than in the Coupe. The bulkhead includes integrated rollover protection in the form of two strong, spring-tensioned plates. Head/thorax side bags in the backrests protect the passengers in the event of a side impact. Full-size airbags stand at the ready in the event of a head-on collision. In a rear-end collision, the integral head restraint system reduces the risk of whiplash injuries.With manual transmission, the R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro weighs only 1,720kg thanks primarily to its aluminium Audi Space Frame (ASF) body. Despite reinforcements in the area of the sills, the centre tunnel, the rear wall, the floor pan and the A- and B-pillars, the body weighs only 216kg – just 6kg more than that of the R8 Coupé. The high rigidity of the ASF body, which includes an integrated engine frame of ultra-lightweight magnesium, provides the foundation for the car’s dynamic handling and superior safety.

Safety and visual appeal are also enhanced by the light-emitting diode (LED) headlights which are standard equipment, and a so far unparalleled world first for Audi. LEDs are used for the low beams, the high beams, the daytime running lights and the turn signals. With a colour temperature of 6,000 Kelvin, the LED light is very similar to daylight, making it easier on the eyes when driving at night. Additional strengths include excellent light distribution, long service life and extremely low energy consumption.

New seatbelt-mounted mobile phone microphones
The open-top two-seater from Audi features a spacious, typically high quality interior that, helped by a front luggage compartment with a useful 100 litre capacity, is genuinely comfortable and practical enough to make everyday use a pleasure rather than a chore. The low-mounted, electrically adjustable seats position the body perfectly in relation to the flat-bottomed steering wheel and the clear, logically arranged dials. The generous standard equipment list for UK models includes an extended leather package featuring Fine Nappa leather, the Audi Music Interface iPod connection system (or a CD changer as required) linked to a Bang & Olufsen sound system, heated seats, DVD satellite navigation and – in another world first for Audi – seatbelt-mounted microphones which make it possible to talk on the phone even with the top down on the motorway.

Like its Coupe relative, the Audi R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro, which was developed in co-operation with quattro GmbH, delivers absolutely uncompromising performance. The naturally aspirated V10 engine with its aluminium crankcase, much of which is hand-built, produces 530 Nm (390.91 lb-ft) of torque at 6,500 rpm and peak output of 525PS at 8,000 rpm as it revs freely to its 8,700 rpm limit.

Performance reflects this awesome potential: 0 - 62mph in 4.1 seconds; 0 - 124mph in 12.7 seconds; a top speed of 194mph for the six-speed manual version – all delivered with a heady 10-cylinder soundtrack that is of course even easier to savour in this open-top model.

The 5.2-litre engine with FSI direct fuel injection has a high 12.5:1 compression ratio that contributes to the high performance and also to a 19.0mpg combined economy figure for the manual transmission version that is an impressive achievement considering this car’s performance capabilities. With R tronic, this figure improves to 20.3mpg. Dry sump lubrication, another motorsport technology, ensures that the supply of oil is maintained even at the maximum lateral acceleration of 1.2 g.

The optional six-speed R tronic transmission offers a normal and a sport program as well as a fully automatic and a manual mode. The manual mode allows the driver to make lightning-fast gear changes using the lever on the centre tunnel or with the paddles on the steering wheel. The open-air sports car also comes with ‚ ‘launch control’ – a program that manages engagement of the clutch perfectly to maximize acceleration at start.

The quattro permanent all-wheel drive features a central viscous coupling and distributes power to all four wheels with a heavy rear bias. It works together with the locking differential on the rear axle to provide significantly greater traction, stability, cornering speed and precision.

Standard Audi magnetic ride
The Audi R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro has a 2,650mm wheelbase and a 43:57 axle load distribution. Double triangular wishbones made of aluminium suspend all four wheels, and Audi magnetic ride optimizes composure both in terms of ride comfort and handling. The system uses magnetic fields in the shock absorbers to adjust their response to road conditions within milliseconds and adapt to the driver’s style. The driver can choose between two settings.

The R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro rides on 19-inch 10-spoke Y design alloy wheels. The front rims are shod with 235/35 tyres, with 295/30 tyres at the rear. 305/30 tyres are optionally available. The brakes offer impressive performance: The four discs are internally ventilated and perforated, with eight-piston calipers up front and four-piston calipers at the rear. Carbon fibre-ceramic discs that are extremely light, robust and long-lived are available at extra cost. The ESP stabilization system has a Sport mode and can also be completely deactivated. The brake system includes a Hill Hold Assist function that facilitates starting on gradients.

Dramatic e-tron concept stuns Frankfurt show

Audi has revealed the e-tron, a high-performance sports car concept with a purely electric drive system at the Frankfurt Motor Show today. The register of interest is now available to customers via audi.co.uk or by visiting an Audi Centre.

Four motors – two each at the front and rear axles – drive the wheels, making the concept car a true quattro. The e-tron produces 230 kW and 4,500 Nm of torque, and accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds. The lithium-ion battery provides a useable energy content of 42.4 kwh, which allows the e-tron to cover around 154 miles on one charge.

The e-tron’s design proves that an electric car can compete with conventional petrol and diesel sports cars. The battery sits directly behind the passenger cabin to give it the optimal centre of gravity and axle load distribution.

The concept
Electric drive systems are significantly more efficient than combustion engines, making them better for the environment and cheaper to run. They can also be very sporty because all of the torque is available the moment the driver steps on the accelerator, giving breathtaking acceleration.

The greatest challenge of getting a concept ready for large scale production is the integration of the energy storage system. Acceptable range and performance requires a traction battery that is heavy and takes up a lot of space. Audi is taking a new, holistic approach, with a specific vehicle package, a systematic lightweight construction concept and an optimal configuration of all components for the electric drive.

The holistic approach

Lithium-ion cells are being developed for use in cars to reduce weight and increase capacity and performance. Audi will use lithium-ion technology in a hybrid production vehicle, such as the upcoming Q5 hybrid, and in the e-tron concept.

The brief for the e-tron concept goes far beyond battery technology and the replacement of the combustion engine with an electric drive system, however. Audi’s development engineers decided to design nearly every component based on the new requirements of electric mobility. This integrated approach means that the e-tron’s efficiency, range and practicality are ground-breaking.

The Audi team focused on:
The reduction of road resistances to increase the vehicle’s range. Lightweight construction was a top priority for the e-tron concept car. The body, in particular, combines low weight with supreme strength and rigidity. An intelligent aerodynamics concept with active elements helps to reduce energy consumption
• The safe integration of the electric drive system and the battery. Placing the battery in front of the rear axle ensures an optimal axle load distribution without compromising the overall design and the generous amount of interior space
• Advanced battery technology that enables a practical range and has a long service life. The battery system is water-cooled for optimal performance and service life
• A needs-based energy management system to control all functions for the chassis, convenience equipment and other auxiliary consumers
• An innovative thermal management system with matched cooling and heating components considers the cooling requirements of the battery and the drive system in addition to the interior temperature
• Driving dynamics and road comfort are what Audi customers have come to expect in the sports car segment
• Vehicle safety is on par with the best of today’s production vehicles
• Clear and comprehensive information for the driver

The e-tron concept car uses car-to-x communication technology developed by Audi to improve the efficiency of conventionally powered vehicles. For example, information about traffic light cycle times and the flow of traffic – provided by the infrastructure and other vehicles – is used to compute an optimal driving strategy. Audi has already modelled such a solution in Ingolstadt as part of its “travolution” project.

Design and package
High-efficiency LED technology is used for all lighting units on the e-tron. The headlamps are the core of a fully automatic light assistance system that reacts flexibly to any situation. The new technology recognises weather conditions and adapts the illumination to rain or fog. The technology at the heart of the light assistance system is a camera that works with a fast computer to detect oncoming traffic, recognise lanes and measure visibility.

If there is oncoming traffic, for example, the high beams are turned off in the corresponding section of the illumination field. The cornering light system analyses data from the navigation system and illuminates corners before the driver steers into them. The Audi e-tron does not have conventional fog lamps that consume additional power. It instead intelligently varies the low beams to widen the illumination field, thus significantly reducing the glare from the car’s own lights. The variability of the headlamps is also reflected in their design. The LED elements change the appearance and the character of the front end of the vehicle depending on the speed driven and the ambient conditions.

A new design element unique to the e-tron are the air intakes in the single-frame grille and in front of the rear wheel wells. They are closed flush under normal circumstances and opened by means of flaps when additional air is needed for cooling. The flaps are kept closed when not in use so that the concept car has a remarkably low drag coefficient.

The vehicle body is compact. The sweeping line of the front end and the flat curved roof immediately identify the two-seater as an Audi. The contours of the flanks are familiar. The tapering of the dynamic line above the sill and the shoulder line tie together the front end, the side and the rear, lend a plastic quality to the doors and the transition to the side air intake and sharply emphasize the Audi-typical round wheel wells with the large, 19-inch tyres.

At 1.90 m wide, 4.26 m long and 1.23 m tall, the e-tron has the proportions of a supercar. The wheelbase of 2.60 m leaves plenty of room between the axles for people and technology. Like with a mid-engined sports car, the cabin of the e-tron is shifted far forward toward the front axle, leaving room in front of the rear axle for the roughly 470 kg battery unit, the inverter and the power electronics.

The two electric motors, which have their own cooling system, are mounted behind the rear axle. The front electric motors are mounted on the front axle, with their cooling system arranged in front of them. This special package, which features a 42:58 weight distribution, ensures perfect balance, which contributes to the driving dynamics of the e-tron.

Systematic lightweight construction is an important prerequisite for efficiency and range with electric vehicles than for conventionally powered automobiles. The body structure is based on Audi Space Frame (ASF) technology. All add-on parts – doors, covers, sidewalls and roof – are made of a fibre-reinforced plastic.

The combination of aluminium and carbon fibre-reinforced composite material guarantees supreme rigidity coupled with low weight. Audi will use this technology in a similar form for production vehicles. Despite the complex drive system layout with four electric motors and a high-capacity battery system, the total weight of the Audi e-tron is only around 1,600 kg.

Interior and control concept
Optical and functional references to the new drive concept characterise the interior design. They establish an advanced connection between proven Audi genes and new formal hallmarks. Typical for the Audi design language is the reduction of the architecture, controls and flow of information to the essential in favour of visible lightweight construction and a tidy overall impression.

The dash appears to float and has a curve that extends laterally into the door panels. With no need to allow for a transmission, shifter and cardan tunnel, the designers took advantage of the opportunity to create a particularly slim and lightweight centre tunnel and centre console. The flush gear selector, with which the driver chooses between the modes forward, reverse and neutral, emerges from the tunnel when the vehicle is started.

The cockpit of the e-tron is also oriented toward the driver – another characteristic Audi trait. Instead of the classic instrument cluster, the concept car is the first Audi to be equipped with a large, fold-out central display with integrated MMI functions. The MMI is controlled via a scroll pad with a touch-sensitive surface on the steering wheel (“MMI touch”) – an element inspired by modern smartphones.

While an analog speedometer on the right provides speed information, the instrument on the left tells the driver how much power is being drawn. The central display shows the range in the status bar and presents all key information from the infotainment and navigation systems. It also provides the driver with relevant data from the vehicle’s communication with its surroundings. The instruments combine the analog and the digital worlds into a single unit.

Characteristic for the concept of the Audi e-tron is the near total elimination of switches and small components such as the ignition. The climate control unit is located to the right above the steering wheel. The display provides temperature and ventilation information. Again drawing inspiration from a smartphone, the system is controlled by means of a touch-sensitive sliding control.

The racing-inspired lightweight bucket seats combine excellent lateral support with comfort. Two contrasting colours – snow white and cognac – delineate the various zones of the interior. The colours and the high-quality materials combine elegance and sportiness.

Drive system and energy supply
Four asynchronous motors with a total output of 230 kw give the Audi e-tron the performance of a high-output sports car. The concept car can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds. The torque flows selectively to the wheels based on the driving situation and the condition of the road surface, resulting in outstanding traction and handling.

The top speed is limited to 124.27 mph because the amount of energy required by the electric motors increases disproportionately to speed. The range in the NECD combined cycle is around 154 miles. This is made possible by the integrated concept: technology specially configured for the electric drive system combined with state-of-the-art battery technology. The battery block has a total energy content of roughly 53 kwh, with the usable portion restricted to 42.4 kwh to increase service life.

The energy storage unit is charged with household current (230 volts, 16 amperes) via a cable and a plug. The socket is behind a cover at the back of the car. With the battery fully discharged, the charging time is between six and eight hours. A high voltage (400 volts, 63 amperes) reduces this to around 2.5 hours. Audi engineers are working on a wireless solution to make charging more convenient. The inductive charging station, which can be placed in the garage at home or in special parking garages, is activated automatically when the vehicle is docked. Such technology is already used today in a similar form to charge electric toothbrushes.

The battery is charged not only when the car is stationary, but also when it is in motion. This form of energy recovery and return to the battery is already available today in a number of Audi production models. During braking, the alternator converts the kinetic energy into electrical energy, which it then feeds into the onboard electrical system.

The Audi e-tron is slowed by an electronic braking system of four lightweight ceramic brake discs. The electronic braking system makes it possible to tap into the recuperation potential of the electric motors. A hydraulic fixed-caliper brake is mounted on the front axle, with two electrically-actuated floating-caliper brakes mounted on the rear axle. These floating calipers are actuated not by any mechanical or hydraulic transfer elements, but rather by wire (“brake by wire”). This eliminates frictional losses caused by residual slip when the brakes are not being applied.

This decoupling of the brake pedal enables the e-tron’s electric motors to convert all of the braking energy into electricity and recover it. The electromechanical brake system is only activated if greater deceleration is required. These control actions are unnoticeable to the driver, who feels only a predictable and constant pedal feel as with a hydraulic brake system.

The heat pump
The heat pump – used here for the first time ever in a car – also increases efficiency and range. Unlike a combustion engine, the electric drive system may not produce enough waste heat under all operating conditions to effectively heat the interior. Other electric vehicles are equipped with electric supplemental heaters, which consume a relatively large amount of energy. The heat pump used by Audi – and commonly used in buildings – is a highly efficient machine that uses mechanical work to provide heat with a minimal energy.

A high-efficiency climate control system is used to cool the interior. It works together with the thermal management system which also controls the temperature of the high-voltage battery. The battery, the power electronics and the electric motors must be kept at their respective ideal operating temperatures to achieve optimal performance and range.

As soon as the vehicle is connected to a charging station, it is preconditioned as appropriate by the thermal management and other associated systems.

The drive system is heated if temperatures are cool, and cooled if hot. This preconditioning can be extended to the interior so that passengers can step into a cabin that has been heated or cooled for their comfort.

Driving dynamics
The normal distribution of tractive power is clearly biased toward the rear axle in accordance with the weight distribution of the e-tron. Similarly to a mid-engined sports car, roughly 70 percent of the power goes the rear and 30 percent to the front. If an axle slips, this balance can be varied by the four centrally controlled electric motors.

The four individual motors, which are installed behind the wheels as wheel drives to give greater traction, also enable the e-tron’s lateral dynamics to be intelligently controlled. The targeted acceleration of individual wheels (torque vectoring) – makes the e-tron even more dynamic while simultaneously enhancing driving safety. Understeer and oversteer can be corrected by the targeted activation of the brakes and by precise increases in power lasting just a few milliseconds. The concept car remains extremely neutral even under great lateral acceleration and handles superbly through corners.

The chassis has triangular double wishbones at the front axle and trapezoidal wishbones made of forged aluminum components at the rear axle – a geometry that is a prerequisite for high agility, uncompromising precision and precisely defined self-steering behavior.

The direct rack-and-pinion steering gives finely differentiated feedback. Its electromechanical steering boost varies with speed, so that the e-tron only has to provide energy while steering, and not while driving straight ahead.

The e-tron concept car rolls on 19-inch tiyes with a new blade design. 235/35 tyres up front and 295/30 tyres at the back provide the necessary grip.

Car-to-x communication
The electronics development engineers at Audi aimed to make the e-tron as efficient and fun to drive as possible, while being concerned with safety and traffic management. The technical concept car includes a prototype of an information processing system. Future generations of these systems will usher in a new era in the networking of road traffic, particularly in regions and countries with high volumes of traffic. This progress is made possible by the rapid advancements in computing power, software and communication technology.

The buzzword ‚car-to-x communication’ refers to the direct exchange of information in flowing traffic and to the traffic environment. The letter ‘x’ is a free variable that can refer just as easily to other vehicles as to fixed infrastructure such as traffic lights. In contrast to today’s telematic systems, car-to-x communication does not require a central service provider to quickly and effectively pool and process information. The participants perform these tasks by spontaneously networking with one another.

The future car-to-x network needs further development before it becomes reality on the roads. However, nearly every carmaker in Europe, the USA. and Japan has decided to develop a common standard for hardware and software to ensure compatability. Once all new cars are equipped with this technology, a functional network of automotive transmitters will be available in large population centres. This will provide information about accidents from vehicles involved in the accident (eg location), traffic flow information and car parking information.

A5 Sportback makes its world debut

The A5 Sportback makes its world debut today as part of the Brand’s 100th anniversary celebrations. Audi is exactly 100 years young today (Thursday 16 July).

The A5 Sportback is a striking new five-door interpretation of the A5 formula that is a fitting testament to a century of boundary-breaking innovation in the fields of car design and engineering.

The new A5 Sportback subtly blends its additional doors into the sweeping curves that are instantly recognisable hallmarks of the A5 Coupe, and fully justifies their presence through an extended chassis that enables it to run the spacious A4 Saloon close on rear head and leg room.

The benefits of the increase in wheelbase length from 2,751mm in the Coupe to 2,810mm are also evident in the load bay, which, with a 480 litre capacity when the rear seats are in place, comes close to matching the A4 Avant. When luggage takes priority and the rear seat backs are folded down, a total of 980 litres of space can be freed up.

Four advanced direct injection engines will power the A5 Sportback – the 2.0-litre TFSI with 211PS and the 3.2-litre V6 FSI with 265PS from the petrol family, and the 2.0-litre TDI with 170PS and 3.0-litre V6 TDI with 240PS from the diesel range.

Initially, 2.0 TFSI, 3.2 FSI and 3.0 TDI engines will channel their power via the latest generation, rapid-shifting S tronic twin-clutch transmission to the quattro all-wheel-drive system. A six-speed manual gearbox will be reserved for the front-wheel-driven 2.0 TDI so that the most economy-focused model in the first launch phase will benefit from the latest start-stop and energy recuperation technology.

Further engine variants and additional quattro models will be phased in during 2009, and the automatic transmission options will also become more widely available.

Sport differential hones handling
With reduced overhangs and optimised weight distribution – made possible by the latest generation chassis with front axle repositioned ahead of the clutch – A5 Coupe, Cabriolet and Sportback models are characterised by outstanding agility and composure. These traits are brought into especially sharp focus in quattro versions by the new optional sport differential. The new differential technology - available initially for 3.2 FSI quattro and 3.0 TDI quattro versions as an element of the extra cost Audi drive select adaptive dynamics system - enables the quattro system to transfer torque between the front and rear axles to counter traction losses, and between the rear wheels to reduce steering effort and push the car through a corner.

The high-tech, high grip chassis can be enjoyed by up to four adults in meticulously finished surroundings. The spacious, high quality cabin can be equipped to SE or S line specification, with a third Standard trim level reserved for four-cylinder models. All options include features such as climate control, a CD audio system, split folding rear seats and a Driver’s Information System (DIS), while SE models take a step up with comforts including full Milano leather upholstery, acoustic parking sensors and automatic headlight and wiper activation. On top of this, S line specification makes the most of the sharply sculpted lines of the A5 Sportback through exclusive grille and bumper treatments, larger 18-inch alloy wheels, xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lights and LED rear lights.

In addition to Audi drive select, the options list for the new A5 Sportback features driving assistants, including adaptive cruise control, the Audi side assist blind spot alert system and the Audi lane assist lane departure warning system. Crowds at last weekend’s Goodwood Festival were given the first British view of the exciting Audi A1 project quattro. The exciting new small car concept got excellent reviews from the enthusiasts who flocked to the impressive Audi stand at the event, which attracted more than 170, 000 visitors.

First unveiled at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show, the concept car is a distinctive design study bringing typical Audi character to the sub-compact segment. In typical Audi fashion, the three-door four-seater car showcases new ways of heightening efficiency, dynamism and motoring pleasure with a series of visionary technical solutions. Characteristic Audi sportiness plus a whole new dimension in efficiency – it is all down to the novel combination of a state-of-the-art turbocharged FSI engine with an electric motor and innovative control electronics.
The drive unit for the Audi A1 project quattro showcases a fully independent and innovative hybrid technology. At work under the bonnet is a 1.4-litre turbocharged FSI engine developing 150PS, whose power is directed to the front wheels by means of the S tronic Direct Shift Gearbox.

A 41PS electric motor on the rear axle can deliver up to an additional 200 Nm of torque when the vehicle is accelerating. In boost mode - in other words, when the vehicle is being powered simultaneously by the turbocharged FSI unit and electric motor for dynamic performance - the study is transformed from a front-wheel drive car to a quattro, and power is transferred to the road in the most effective way possible.

Audi celebrates at record-breaking Goodwood Festival

A record-breaking 170,000 spectators attended this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed, which was dominated by Audi as it celebrated its centenary.

'True Grit – Epic Feats of Endurance' was the theme for this year’s event, where Audi was the featured marque. Rare Auto Union Grand Prix cars, all-wheel-drive Audi quattro rally and touring cars, and the latest diesel
Le Mans sportscars were all in action and on display to mark 100 years of Audi. There were also dedicated Audi areas, including the Audi terminal, the Audi experience and the 4 x 4 course.

Formula 1 and Le Mans legend Jacky Ickx drove the Auto Union Type D Dual Compressor, while Pink Floyd drummer and Audi enthusiast Nick Mason drove a 3.0-litre supercharged V12 Auto Union Type D. Former World Rally Champions Walter Röhrl, Stig Blomqvist and Hannu Mikkola, plus Le Mans 24 Hour race legends Allan McNish, Frank Biela, Dindo Capello, Emanuele Pirro and Marco Werner, were also in action for Audi on the hillclimb.

The Audi Experience offered customers a chance to find out more about the Audi brand and learn about motorsport history in the process. A programme of interviews and interactive displays, including a walk-in aerodynamics air tunnel, Ben Fogle's lecturette on feats of endurance and Sir Bobby Charlton's interview with Jamie Redknapp, were just some of the highlights.

Audi also ran the 4 x 4 area, where visitors could book themselves a session driving an A4 allroad, A6 allroad, Audi Q5 or Audi Q7 with an instructor around the purpose-built track. Events Manager Hannah Lake ran the 4 x 4 course and said: "We've had a brilliant weekend. We were fully booked every day and all the comments we've had from customers have been incredible.

"The 4 x 4 course is always a popular area because festival-goers get to take our cars on more than just a test drive. The course is a real test of each model's performance, as well as an exciting challenge for the customer in the driving seat."

The A1 concept was on display with the TT RS Coupe, which goes on sale next weekend (11 and 12 July), in the Audi terminal building.

Goodwood stats

· A record 170,000 people attended a sold-out Goodwood Festival last weekend

· Around 1,400 marshals kept competitors and spectators safe during the weekend

· It takes around 2,000 man hours of labour to build the temporary hillclimb course, and a further 1,200 man hours to dismantle it

Tyre laws are changing

New EU regulations relating to tyre noise are being introduced from 1 October 2009. Tyres sold after this date must carry certain markers to show they comply with the new laws.

Only smaller tyres (less than 185mm wide) will have to comply this year; regulations for larger tyres will be introduced in October 2010 and October 2011.

Centres in the Audi Tyre Programme will not be affected, because all stocks already comply with these changes.

A8 retains green title

The Audi A8 2.8 V6 FSI SE has been named Green Car of the Year in the luxury car class at the 2009 What Car? Green Awards. It is the second year in a row that the A8 has taken the award and it beat a number of much newer cars to the accolade.

Fergus Cable-Alexander, Product Executive for the A8, collected the award and commented: “This is further proof that the A8 is still right at the top of the class. It ticks all the luxury car boxes – great ride, comfort and refinement and it’s unbeatable as a green car. To win with a petrol engine against all the diesels is even more impressive.”

What Car? on the A8 2.8 V6 FSI SE:

“The aluminium-bodied Audi A8 emits less than 200g/km of CO2 and can manage an impressive 34.0mpg on average.

These are produced by a smooth V6 petrol engine, too, so if you're swinging by the school to pickup the children, you don't have to worry about any of those nasty particulates blowing into the playground.

It also means that you don't have to pay the three per cent company car tax penalty levied on diesel engines, and NOx emissions are also very low.

Yes, the new BMW 730d does have a lower CO2 output and better average economy, but because it's a diesel, it comes with higher NOx and particulates as a result – and it just isn't the great luxury car that we were hoping it would be.

The ride is composed, thanks to its air suspension, and the car is also quiet at speed – barely a grumble is heard from the engine, even under hard acceleration. Drive it on a motorway and you might notice some wind noise, but you still won't have to raise your voice to make yourself heard.

It might not sound like much compared with rivals, but we think the 2.8-litre engine has more than enough poke to get you going. It won't give you a face-lift, but it still manages to sprint to 60mph in 8.0 seconds and reach a top speed of 149mph.”

R8 V10 launch a storming success

Audi launched the R8 V10 at Silverstone last weekend with a hugely successful test drive event, despite the grim weather.

Three hundred people drove an R8 V10 during the weekend. Sessions included dynamic driving, circuit driving around the Stowe track and ceramic brake testing.

Formula 1 veterans Johnny Herbert, Emanuele Pirro and Allan McNish were on hand to chat to customers about the R8 V10 and took one lucky winner from each session out on a hot lap round the Silverstone track.

Nick Hardy, a participant at the launch described the R8 as “utterly gob-smacking”, adding that “I have driven all sorts of cars on track days, but the R8 was just incredible.”

Participants’ guests had the chance to try out the 4x4 track with an instructor, go out on a hot lap in an RS6, or test drive an A3 Cabriolet, A5 Cabriolet or a TT Roadster.

The total number of R8 V10 orders secured at Silverstone has yet to be confirmed, but early indications and customer feedback have been very encouraging.

Natalie Gray, Events Manager at Audi UK, commented: “the R8 V10 launch has been fantastic. Even the rain played to the R8 V10’s strengths, showing customers just how good the handling is, whatever the weather!”

Audi wins 2009 Fleet World Manufacturer of the Year award

Audi has been awarded the coveted title of Fleet Manufacturer of the Year by Fleet World Magazine in its 2009 Honours, held this week at London’s prestigious RAC Club in Pall Mall.

The awards were judged by a panel including Fleet World Editor Ken Rogers, Managing Editor Ross Durkin and other leading lights from the leasing and automotive market analysis industries. The judges felt that the Vorsprung durch Technik brand’s increasingly strong image and consistently high standard of service to the industry were as instrumental in securing its top position as the flourishing range of 31 cost-effective and desirable Audi models.

Iain Carmichael, Head of Audi Fleet Sales, who was delighted to accept the award on behalf of his team, said: “At Audi UK we are lucky to be working with an outstanding model range characterised by exceptional design and quality, increasingly strong residual values and surprisingly low running costs.”

408PS Audi Q5 custom concept shown in Austria

A new interpretation of the Audi Q5 SUV featuring a power-enhanced 3.0-litre TFSI petrol engine delivering a mighty 408PS will be one of the stars of the 2009 Worthersee Tour (May 20-23), Austria’s now legendary GTI meet for enthusiasts from all over Europe.

The purpose-built Q5, which also features a unique paint job and a lowered and widened chassis connected to the tarmac by 21-inch wheels, will take centre stage on a 3,000 square metre Audi stand dedicated to the centennial celebration ‘100 years of Audi’. In addition to historic models from various decades, the Ingolstadt carmaker will feature showcase vehicles such as the Audi TT RS, the Audi R8 5.2 FSI quattro, R8 LMS and the Audi A1 Sportback.

Audi engineers prepared the Q5 custom concept especially for the Worthersee Tour. Finished in the matt custom colour Daytona Grey, the test bed for Audi Genuine Accessories rolls on 21-inch wheels of seven twin-spoke design, and features a 90 millimetre wider track and a 60 millimetre lower ride height compared to the standard Q5. The power output of the supercharged 3.0 TFSI V6 engine, which until now has been reserved for the S4, the S5 Cabriolet and the A6, has been increased from a maximum of 333PS in the S4 and S5 Cabriolet to 408PS, allowing the Audi Q5 custom concept to accelerate from 0 to 62mph in 4.4 seconds. Top speed is governed at 155mph.

Audi Q5 scores five stars in Euro NCAP tests

The Audi Q5 has scored the highest possible safety rating in its Euro NCAP test.
The five star rating is calculated from a series of safety tests, including the famous crash dummy test. The precise model in the test was the Audi Q5 2.0TDI, RHD. The BMW X3 scored four stars in the test.

Adult occupant
The passenger compartment remained stable in the frontal test, the screen pillar moving rearwards only 3mm. Adapative airbags and seatbelts tailor the timing and the degree of restraint to suit the size of the occupant and the severity of the impact. Protection of the passenger was good for all parts of the body. For the driver, the steering column presented a risk of injury to femurs. The car scored maximum points for its performance in the side barrier test with good protection of all body regions. In the side pole test, chest protection was marginal. The seat and head restraint provided good protection against whiplash injuries.

Child occupant
Based on dummy readings, maximum points were scored for the protection provided to both the 3 year and the 1½ year children in the frontal and side impact tests. Forward movement of the head of the 3 year child, sat in a forward-facing seat, was not excessive in the frontal impact and the heads of both dummies were contained by the restraints in the side impact. The passenger airbag can be disabled to allow a rearward-facing child restraint to be used in that seating position. However, information provided to the driver regarding the status of the airbag is not sufficiently clear.

Pedestrian
The bonnet offered poor protection in most areas likely to be struck by a pedestrian's head. Similarly, protection offered by the front edge of the bonnet to pedestrian's legs was poor. Only the bumper scored maximum points, offering good protection.

Safety assist
Electronic stability control is standard equipment on the Q5 as is a seatbelt reminder system for the front seating positions.

S4 is a Rocketship on the road

Drivers-republic journalist Chris Harris likened the new S4 to a “rocketship on the road” and described it as “the best Audi S car I’ve driven” in an overwhelmingly positive review.

Harris used the MMI controls to adjust the quattro sport differential to test whether the S4 could oversteer on a dry Silverstone track.

German motorway strewn with notes

A man in Germany discovered the dangers of driving an open-top car when an envelope containing 23,000 euros (£20,600) blew off the back seat.
The notes rained down on the fast-moving motorway traffic behind him.
Police closed the road in both directions for half an hour to search for the missing money. All but 3,000 euros was recovered.
The man, 23, was test-driving an Audi convertible near Hanover, and the money was intended to pay for the car.

The police have warned the public against scavenging along the motorway for the missing notes, pointing out that it would be illegal to keep them.
And things could get even more expensive for the German test-driver. The police are considering charging him for the cost of the search.
The motorway closure caused long tailbacks in both directions.

Five stars for R8 V10 - Autocar Magazine

Autocar handed the R8 V10 its top accolade – five stars – after its ‘First drive’ in the car.

Road tester Jamie Corstorphine wrote that he was unconvinced, pre-drive, that more power could make the R8 better, but his verdict was unreserved.

“The original R8, with its 414bhp 4.2-litre V8, is just so peachy; the balance of power and grip is so well judged. Could performance add to this, or spoil the mix?

“The short answer is that the V10 does enhance the experience, moving the R8 from sports car to supercar, but without diluting its usability. Better still the V10 doesn’t detract from the V8’s appeal; each car occupies a subtly different part of the market.”

Audi star cars and drivers for Goodwood

Two of the most important cars in Audi’s competition history will be driven at this summer’s Goodwood Festival of Speed by two of the biggest stars in motorsport. Double world rally champion Walter Röhrl will appear behind the wheel of the Audi Sport quattro S1 Pikes Peak and six-time Le Mans winner Jacky Ickx will drive a 1936 Auto Union C-Type grand prix car.

Audi is the ‘featured marque’ at Goodwood this year and it will bring a mouth-watering line-up of competition machinery from past and present to the event and its latest concept cars for the road. The Festival of Speed, an annual event, will take place this year on 3 - 5 July.

Audi Sport quattro S1 Pikes Peak

Rohrl, 62, was an Audi factory driver in his heyday, competing in both rally and racing cars including the Audi quattro A2, which he drove to victory in his first outing for Audi in the 1984 Monte Carlo Rally and the “short” Audi Sport quattro. Röhrl was the only person to win a WRC round – the 1985 San Remo Rally – in the Audi Sport quattro S1, the last generation of the Sport quattro.

After Audi’s withdrawal from rallying in 1986, Röhrl, who was described by the great Niki Lauda as “a genius on wheels,” moved with Audi to the race tracks of the United States where he drove the Audi 200 quattro TransAm and the Audi 90 quattro IMSA-GTO to victory.

Arguably the most unforgettable triumph in Röhrl’s Audi career came on Pikes Peak – a 12.5-mile, 156-corner hillclimb in Colorado featuring sheer drops off the narrow and winding, rocky track to the 14,000-foot summit.

On the Audi Sport quattro S1’s very last outing, Röhrl smashed all records in the United States’ most famous hillclimb, the ‘Race to the Clouds’. In a breathtaking drive, he became the first person to climb the 6,500ft course in under 11 minutes, leaving his indelible mark on motorsport history.

1936 Auto Union C-Type

Ickx held the record for Le Mans 24 Hour race wins until Audi’s Tom Kristensen surpassed the 64-year-old’s tally of six victories in 2005. Jacky, who also achieved 25 podium place finishes in Formula 1, drives a 1936 Auto Union C-Type lovingly and expertly rebuilt in 1998.

The V16-engined ‘Silver Arrow’ was capable of reaching speeds in excess of 220mph despite its 1,000kg weight. The C-Type’s engine churns out an impressive 520bhp.

Almost all of the original Auto Union race cars were lost during or after World War II. Audi has since rebuilt the cars that have been found based upon remaining parts, plans and knowledge.
