According to Department of Transport road accident statistics winter road accidents in the UK increase by 267%.

In response, tyre manufacturers have developed specific winter tyres that are designed to outperform regular tyres in cold weather, when the temperature drops below 7°C. The unique tread pattern design and softer rubber of a winter tyre means stopping distances are greatly reduced, while grip and handling are much improved.

It's why Audi recommends fitting winter tyres this season.

Winter versus regular: a tyre comparison

Winter tyres are designed to outperform regular tyres in all cold weather conditions, including slush, ice, frost and wet roads.

1) At temperatures below 7°c, the compound of a regular tyre begins to harden and lose its flexibility. Winter tyres have a higher percentage of natural rubber, enabling them to remain soft and pliable and 'key' into the road surface when temperatures drop - increasing grip by as much as 60 per cent over regular tyres.

2) Specifically designed tread patterns allow water and slush to escape from under the tyre more easily, reducing the risk of aquaplaning.

3) A high number of 'sipes' are cut into the tread blocks. These small zig-zag shaped grooves provide extra biting surfaces to interlock with snow and ice, offering increased grip on the road surface.

4) An increased number of tread blocks provide narrow channels to trap snow in the tread, and because snow sticks to itself better than rubber does, the tyre is able to grip onto a snow surface.

The average winter temperature in the UK is 3.7°c* and in 2010 there were five months where the average was below 7°c. Winter tyres have been designed specifically to perform at temperatures below 7°c, so it pays to plan ahead and swap tyres no later than September or October.

We recommend changing back to your regular tyres when temperatures begin to rise again, typically in March. As you would expect from Audi we will supply and fit replacement tyres at any Audi Centre or Authorised repairer. We will also give your vehicle a complimentary health check to ensure essential safety-related items are in good condition.

Winter Tyres FAQ

Is it enough in winter just to drive more slowly?

Below 7°C you would stop 11 metres sooner than with summer tyres (when braking on an icy road from just 20mph). That is 4.8 metres shorter in wet conditions from 60mph.

Do I have to drive more slowly with winter tyres?

Tyres are rated for the maximum amount of speed and weight they should carry. Typically winter tyres have a lower speed rating than the summer tyre for your car. However, even an H rated tyre has a maximum speed of 131mph so in winter conditions - this should not be a compromise to your driving.

Do winter tyres wear out quickly?

Winter tyres last as long as summer tyres and perform better in winter conditions. Depending on your mileage, they may last for 2 or 3 winters and so save on the wear on your summer tyres - postponing their replacement.

Why should I buy 4 tyres in a set?

Due to the superior grip from winter tyres it is strongly recommended that all four tyres are replaced at the same time. The car may skid or have less control if only one axle pair is fitted.

Do I need to change over my tyres when it's above 7°C?

We recommend that come March when it should be averaging nearer 7°C in the morning, you change back to summer tyres.
